What does it means to be a Griffin Athlete?

At Saint Thomas More Academy, we believe that the end goal of athletics is not to bring glory to ourselves, nor is it to receive the acclaim of others. It is rather the pursuit of excellence, through sport and physical activity, that gives glory to God who is the Father of every good and perfect gift (cf. James 1:17).
We instill in our student-athletes the right ordering of human activity, with the knowledge that, in the words of Pope Saint John Paul II, "the human body is the instrument [in sport], but the body is not an end in itself." Moreover, we at Saint Thomas More Academy believe that athletics is an integral part of a thriving classical education - most especially in the area of formation in the natural virtues.
There is not a better school for teaching fairness than the exercise of sport for it despises any attempt of cheating as unsportsmanlike. And what asceticism! What an antidote against laziness, indolence and idleness. There is no teacher more demanding than that of sport! How much discipline, how much sacrifice, how much self dominion, courage, and tenacity is required!
Pope Saint Paul VI
